Fisheries Research


The Fisheries Research Group provides technical services to the Department of Commerce on the recreational and commercial fishing industry. This group combines the unique qualities of marine biological knowledge, strong statistical and methodological foundations and years of experience in fisheries data collection. Technical support includes the following:

  • Survey design
  • Questionnaire design
  • Telephone/Mail survey operations
  • Field survey operations management and data collection
  • Comprehensive quality assurance measures
  • Database creation and management
  • Data capture, analysis and presentation
  • Data modeling and interpretation

All activities within the group are designed around the importance of reliable data collection to support environmental research and fisheries management. The Fisheries Research staff includes biologists and fisheries experts, survey design and data processing specialists, statisticians, research assistants, dockside field data collectors, and regional supervisors along the Atlantic Coast.

The Fisheries Research Group conducts the Large Pelagics Survey (LPS) for NOAA Fisheries (The National Marine Fisheries Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce).
